Marty Supreme
Holy goat, let's give it up for Timothee Chalamet! Josh Safdie has confirmed his place as the better Safdie with this one. The true messaging behind Marty Supreme has been questioned as soon as it came out. Not everyone can be a critic, not everyone has the literacy skills and that is ok. It seems this is not a common thought because the people online have dragged this movie through the mud, which I will be addressing. "DREAM BIG" was the message shared while Marty Supreme was going through a promo tour, but is this the inspirational movie it was supposed to be? NO! That is the entire point, Marty is so addicted to acheiving his dreams that he ends up doing whatever it takes. This in turn causes him to harm all the people around him that fall victim to his mess. People complain that too many things happened that were not brought up again, that once again is the point. He does WHATEVER IT TAKES, when that fails, he moves on as it does not serve him anymore. Marty makes excuses as to why he has not achieved his dreams, trying to convince him and the people around him it will happen one day if these excuses were fixed. Orange ping pong balls were never the solution, they were excuses. We see this take place in the end of the movie with the great tennis showdown. Marty plays in white clothes with a white ball, undermining his excuse from the beginning. This is the point. Marty was never supposed to be the symbol for inspirational athletes, he was showing the dangers of obsession. In the end he does not get his happy ending even if that is what was thought to be. He does not get to compete for world champion, he is not paid, he flies home and is only greeted with a baby. The finale only shows the downfall of his dreams. Really, it could be up for interpretation, is he happy to move on or is this going to haunt him much like his loss at the beginning, a cycle that repeats. Overall, the costumes, cinematography, dialogue, the idea of ping pong being so intense is a phenomenal combo. Marty Supreme was the only way to start the year.
