Project X

January 28th

Was it a game changer? Yes. Is it anything crazy? No, I fear not. But hey, cannot hate the playa, got to hate the game. I love found footage, horror and comedy alike it is such a human way to tell a story. There is something so inherently chaotic and intimate about the method of storytelling that fits stories about youth, bad decisions, and the glory of freedom.

Dax Flame has kept up this persona for decades, at this point he is either a method actor or that is who he is. The ambiguity is fascinating and adds an unintential layer to the film that I personally enjoyed. This movie is a relic of it's time and that is ok, this does not automatically classify it as bad. Rather, it just means that this film exists in a specific time in pop culture, not everything is going to age gracefully. That said, this film will not be getting a 5 out of 5 from me. It feels like it was very desperate to copy other teen comedies at the time, such as Superbad. This is not technically a crime although maybe it should be (cough cough; the entirety of the Poohniverse). However, when you attempt to follow something too closely your own individuality will flounder. Instead of feeling inspired it tended to feel like it was chasing validation almost like it wanted so badly to prove it belonged to be in the same conversation as movies in a certain teen comedy bubble rather than blowing it's own.

It did have funny lines but the cinematography did confuse me, or lack of cinematography. I could not tell who was filming in certain moments since this is found footage, that may be my bad but I never felt it was explained it just moved on. Found footage lives or dies based off it's internal logic and here it definitely got shaky. A great example of a found footage film that was edited smoothly with no confusion of who is filming is Creep (2014).

I understand it was dark humor but maybe some should consider some of the jokes were just not funny. Shock alone does not equal comedy, some moments felt more awkward than humorous. I like the classic concept, losers becoming legends. The absurdity of the second half upped it for sure, it transformed from just another party to PROJECT X! The end was specifically my favorite part because of the different endings each character got. Of course an absurd end would end with realistic endings. Overall, classic movie, not my fav. Then again, what do I know? I am just the one with the movie site. #bringbackmilesteller2026
